New Students’ Union positions announced

March 7th, 2012

Hey Everyone,

Thank you for everyone who contributed their feedback to the Phase 2 process of the WLUSU Restructuring. While there are still some loose ends to tie, I would like to inform you about many of the great opportunities to serve students that will exist next year.

As you may know, in the first round of the restructuring, which was announced in mid- January, outlined that there will be a different team of Vice-Presidents to serve students on all campuses moving forward. Recall:

We have built upon this vision in Phase 2 of the process. Each department has now settled the general structure and reporting relationships for their operations next year. As mentioned, there are still some details to be confirmed, but today we will outline the following changes (by student department):

University Affairs Department

  • This department will feature two AVP: University Affairs who are paid (one in Brantford and in Waterloo), and the following volunteer coordinators (for each campus, but will be adjusted based on competition for these positions): Campaign-Education Coordinator, Research-Outreach Coordinator, and an Advocacy-Policy Coordinator
  • Ecohawks (Waterloo) will be moving under the University Affairs Department
  • As part of reforms in the Campus Experience Department in Waterloo, some of the advocacy functions of “Legal Resources” will be moved to the University Affairs Department (under the “Campaign-Education Coordinator”)

Campus Experience Department (Waterloo)

  • Ecohawks (Waterloo) will be moving under the University Affairs Department
  • The “Director of Orientation” role will become a full-year (full-time in the summer, and part-time in the fall/winter) position called AVP: Campus Experience. This position will oversee O-week, full-year Orientation, and help with other departmental initiatives throughout the year under the direction of the VP: Campus Experience
  • The current service “Legal Resources” will no longer exist. Part of its functions will move to the Clubs and Associations Department, and part of its functions will move to the University Affairs department under the “Campaign-Education Coordinator”
  • Farmer’s Market (currently a Campus Club) will be moving under the Food Bank Committee

Campus Experience Department (Brantford)

  • A new part-time, paid Marketing position is going to be hired to aid in the marketing functions on the Brantford Campus
  • There will be three AVP’s who report to the VP: Campus Experience (Brantford)

Clubs and Associations Department

  • We will be hiring additional staff to further improve our ability to offer high quality customer service in order that we serve the financial needs of clubs (reimbursements, etc.) o In Waterloo, the volunteer coordinator structure will be: 4 Liaison Coordinators, a Promotions & Branding Coordinator, and a Special Events Coordinator
  • In Brantford, an AVP will have a working relationship with the VP to ensure high-level policy compliance and best practice
  • Farmer’s Market (currently a Campus Club) will be moving under the Food Bank Committee in the Campus Experience (Waterloo) Department

Finance and Administration Department

  • In Brantford, an AVP will have a working relationship with the VP to ensure high-level policy compliance and best practice
  • Currently, the VP is working on implementation of the new volunteer hiring policies

Important hiring dates can be found here.

Thanks again for all those who contributed to Phase 2! This has been a year in which change has been the constant but in order to serve students in the best way possible we must constantly innovate and challenge ourselves to do better. We have really made some meaningful changes which will support the student experience on each campus better than we have before, and I look forward to meeting all the new faces for next year’s team who we ensure we follow through on just that!
