Behaviour Based Interviews
The goal of behaviour-based interviews is to have the candidate give examples based on his/her own past
experiences, that will relate well to the position for which they are applying. STARR has been designed to
help you provide an answer with all the information your interviewer will want to hear.
Note - It is important that your example is relevant and that all of your STARR response (including your actions)
answers the question asked.
Situation and Task
Situation and Task are there to help you provide your interviewer with a context for the situation you are about to describe.
Situation: What type of scenario were you in? (Example: When I was in my OAC year I was the president of my student council)
Task:
What was your goal at the time? What were you trying to do? (Example: Our main goal was to plan the school formal)
Action:
Tell us what YOU did to work towards achieving your goal / accomplish your task. (Example: I called the hall to get details about booking it for the dates we needed. I also called the catering service and sorted out the dinner plans, as well as organizing the DJ by calling different places to see who would work out best for our needs.) NOTE. It is important that you describe what you did and not what their team did (Example: We organized the dance by calling places and ordering the food).
Result:
How did everything turn out? State the result of the tasks that you previously mentioned. (Example: The formal was a great success. All of the guests had arrived on time. We also managed to stay within our budget.)
Relate:
This is the most important part of any interview – relating what you just talked about to the roles and responsibilities of the position you are applying for. (Example: This will help me to be an effective member of First Year Council as the organization, and communication skills that I acquired will allow me to represent the first year students with great ease).
