Boar’s Head Dinner’s 59th Instalment
Waterloo, ON, November 23, 2008 – The 59th Annual Boar’s Head Dinner will be taking place Monday December 1st in the Turret Nightclub. This semi-formal dinner themed “Year of the Pig” will include entertainment, and the annual chicken eating finals. New this year, students can bid on silent auction items with canned food or cash. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Food Bank of Waterloo Region.
A Laurier tradition since 1949, this semi-formal event will be taking place on the last day of classes in the Fall Term. Legend has it that about 600 years ago at Oxford University in England, a philosophy student known for procrastination was cramming for his exam near the edge of a forest. While studying, a wild boar suddenly emerged from the forest and as the boar charged at the student, he grabbed his textbook and threw the book straight into the throat of the boar. The boar choked and the student took the head of the boar back to the university where his fellow students held a feast in his honour to celebrate this great feat. And so the Boar’s Head Dinner was born.
"The Boar’s Head Dinner is a great, affordable way for students to celebrate the end of term with their friends. It’s an opportunity for them to unwind before finals, and take a much-deserved break from all of the work they do at this time of year,” says Boar’s Head Dinner Coordinator Becca Dunning. “The Dinner’s silent auction is also an opportunity for students to give back to their community in a way that is fun, and financially accessible: students will be able to bid on some incredible auction items using non-perishable food that they bring with them to the Dinner. The Boar’s Head volunteers are really excited to host this event for all Laurier students, and see what good we can accomplish together at the same time."
