Greek Life proves that giving back is what they do best!!

In the past month, Greek Council has had much to boast about as each of their sororities and fraternities have clearly demonstrated that being Greek means thinking of others.  Through their widespread and extensive list of charity work, both the Laurier and Waterloo communities have reaped the benefits of being involved with such a strong and passionate organization. Here are just a few of the contributions that Greek life has recently made or will be making in the coming week:

The Phi Delta Thetas hosted “March Madness” this past Sunday, March 4th at Wilfrid Laurier’s Athletic Complex.  This 3-on-3 basketball fundraiser was put on to benefit the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Kitchener-Waterloo.  Seeing many prizes and great support for their cause, the Phi Delta’s were excited about their accomplishments and were personally congratulated and supported by special guest Brenda Halloran, Mayor of Waterloo.

The Alpha Omega’s would like to extend their thanks to the Wilfrid Laurier community for all of their kind assistance and generous contributions given throughout their “Singing with the Stars” event. Through their donations, the Alpha Omega’s were able to raise an amazing $3,000 for the Anselma House, a local charity that provides emergency assistance for abused women and children.

The Alpha Phi’s 6th annual “Coyote Ugly” event took place this past Wednesday February 28th at the Turret.  The event saw special appearances by Fashion ‘N Motion and the Hawk Girls and had a number of fantastic prizes that were given away.  The event generated a tremendous turn out with over $2,500 of proceeds going towards the Alpha Phi Foundation which promotes research in women’s cardiac care, scholarship, and leadership initiatives.

Pi Kappa Alpha has had the great honour of recently congratulating one of their brother’s, Dan Allison.  Allison was proudly elected as Wilfrid Laurier University’s Students’ Union President for the 2007-2008 school term on February 1st.  His campaigning was assisted by his fraternity brothers, who could be seen throughout campus in colourful t-shirts, passing out campaign flyers and mobilizing voters to their designated voting stations.  The Pi Kappa Alpha’s could not be more proud of Dan and his accomplishment and wish him good luck in his coming term as he executes the ideas seen in his platform.

The Delta Gamma WLU Chapter hosts many fundraising events for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) and this past February was no exception.  From February 5 – 8th this sorority set up a booth in the concourse to sell crocus plants in hopes to raise awareness and funds for this worthy cause. As well, their annual chocolate fantasy occurred on the same day, giving added initiatives to see their contributions rise while having fun at the same time!

The Delta Gamma’s are also hosting their annual Spaghetti Dinner in the Course Wednesday March 7th from 6pm-9pm.  Tickets are only $5.oo and all the proceeds are going to the CNIB.

In addition, the Delta Gamma’s were proud to support one of their Sorority sisters, Heather Hamilton, who performed in “Bat Boy” the Musical in the Theatre Auditorium in mid-February.

All Greek Life Committees came together this past Thursday night March 1st for an evening of fun and excitement as they celebrated all of their year-long accomplishments at the annual Greek Formal.  Located in the Hawk’s Nest, this year’s formal took on the theme of “A Night at the Monte Carlo”.  Despite being held on the night of one of the winter’s worst snow storms, all who were in attendance had a wonderful time.  The following awards were presented to a few of the year’s most recognized Fraternity and Sorority members:

The David McMurray Award - Freddy Enriquez

The Greek Life Award - David Jenkins and Caitlin Tindale

The Philanthropy Award - Alpha Phi

The Scholarship Award - Brian Highgate

The Greek God Award - Dan Hocking

The Greek Goddess Award - Tracy Briggs.

Keep your eyes open for more upcoming charitable initiatives from Wilfrid Laurier’s Greek Life.  The Laurier and Waterloo Communities are lucky to have such generous committees within our midst and we thank them for everything they have contributed thus far and all that they are sure to accomplish in the future.
